I've been to EE and could see a significant difference in the living standards between there and here in Germany: people tend to be thinner, have worse skin, worse styles and their own supermarkets are shit.

It can't be ressources, because many EE countries are rich in ressources, like coal, metals and farming lands.

Not having colonized other continents? Well you don't have to be a great colonial power like Britain and France to become highly developed. Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Finnland etc are good examples. Btw Russia has plundered Asia for centuries yet it's still poor today.

Eastern Europe didn't have the big superpowers like The Holy Roman Empire (Germany), England, France, and Spain. Iirc it was much more rural and lightly populated. While the rest of Europe had long converted to Christianity there were still pagans hanging out there. Eastern Europe has always been less developed and a little behind.

That being said, Eastern Europe has some really beautiful cities like Prague, and really amazing cultures. Them being behind is a big plus when it comes to rejecting open borders globohomo politics. Agreed with what you said about the cities and cultures, but to live there is another thing. First of all if you don't speak the local language there'll be lots of inconveniences.
