Large parts of Eastern Europe were vulnerable to nomadic Asiatic people who destroyed local states and came all the way to Hungary and Poland (the Mongols).

On the other hand places like the Balkans had the opposite problem as far as geography is concerned because of the mountainous terrain it was hard to travel and hard to establish trade and control. Even these days if you go to places like Bosnia or Montenegro it's a nightmare to travel there on roads and it takes a lot of time to get to relatively close locations. They had wars with Turks too.

Eastern Europe basically took a hit so that Western Europe could be safe and develop in peace. Western Europeans established colonies and trade while Eastern Europe was agrarian region that fed them or in the case of the Balkans, a backward region populated by hillbillies from the mountains.

Western Europe had good geographical terrain to defend itself from the Asiatic hordes from the east and it has no enemies from north since Vikings and Germanics civilized. In the West there is Atlantic sea. In the south there is Gibraltar and Alps and Pyrenees. Western Europe lived a peaceful existence if you count out the internal wars while Eastern Europe was much more anarchic and war-torn. Even in WW2 the most brutality was in the East.
