I don't particularly understand nor see why it's so popular and why some games go from not being open to world to open world. With the exception of some games, the open world tends to look soulless. Soulless grassland with nothing.

fun to explore

Even GTA 3's open world has its appeal imo

Most people are happy as long as they have something to do at all even if it doesn't have depth. so, games like Skyrim still do well even though if you think about it for more than 5 seconds you quickly realize that its mostly repetitive. There are good open world games though, like Kenshi

Some open worlds are interesting to explore/loot (eg. Fallout), or are fun for sandbox purposes or look aesthetically pleasing (eg. GTA, RDR). But yeah, tons of games are ruined by going open world, and it's often completely unnecessary imo (Dark Souls' level design mogs Elden Ring's open world, for instance).

Sounds fun and impressive on paper.

because there's more content

People want to go and explore and feel like adventurers sadly most of their worlds are extremely empty, repetitive, shallow and boring. Nothing can replace well put out semi open world levels.

I play it because of the atmosphere.
I like the grey, triste, cold atmosphere.

Most of the time it is raining, cloudy or foggy.

Nowadays I enjoy the fog the most. I take a car, turn on RiseFM and cruise.

I think we love it because there we have more freedom than in the real world even, and the game is fair.
We actually get properly rewarded for a good performance.

i think its about living in a fantasy world which would not be possible in real life

No it doesn't; you're just on antidepressant pills or have been.

more things to do

Good open world games are wonderful for exploring types like myself.

Unfortunately, most games just use it as half-assed padding.

Listening to KJAH while roaming the dark streets in Liberty City feels different

From my experience with mobile games (stuff like naxeex games... I'm not REALLY that much of a gamer, I'll confess) it's probably because it gives a (slightly) stronger vibe of you being immersed in an entirely different world where you're not a khhv loser trucel.
