Just from what I've heard from english teachers that go there. Japanese homes tend to be ludicrously poorly insulated without proper central heating that you might expect to find in a home like the UK. So you freeze in the winter, boil in summer. To keep warm you typically run some kind of oil heater in whichever room you spend the most time in, but its expensive.

Among the non-Japanese, it becomes a competition of who knows Japanese better.

Then you have a clique of gaijin that have lived in Japan and only hang out among themselves.

Instead of playing games or stuff like that, I write the words I am learning on paper.
The trick is to learn the most commonly used words. Later your brain will automatically understand the new words by context and you don't even have to learn the words anymore
