Depends on the game in question. Ideally they should have smooth and responsive controls and gameplay otherwise the difficulty just ends up feeling artifical.

Mostly depends of how I can handle, I didn't like Darkest Dungeon because of how overwhelming and annoying it is. And nothing else in the game interests me. I like Dark Souls cuz it plays just fair but still punishing. And any other else the lore interests me like Post-Apocalypse Zombie Medieval? Bitch count me in.
Away from vanilla we have hard mods made by the community, personally I like them but really depends on the scale. I absolutely love if the gameplay idea is very interesting, clever, fun while being punishingly hard. However if the gameplay centered around being annoying and inhumane level of skill that requires planning, Specifically Doom Slaughters. I'd personally hate them.
