The steam machine is shaping up to be a funny flop

I have done a bit of research on that thing and it is a custom design, which means that both the CPU and GPU are soldered on the motherboard.
Basically like a console.

The NMVE SSDs are awfully close to the hottest components which will reduce their lifespan significantly, afaik.
The entire casing is very narrow and the inside basically consist to 70% of a single fan plus heatsink combination.

If put on any platform the airflow will be significantly obstructed because it mainly sucks air from the bottom, u less you take of the faceplate, in which case it will mainly suck air from the front and dissipate it from the top.

In the later case the mainboard and such will be cooled a lot less.

Since the most important components are soldered, it is basically a console with linux and windows support.

Only fans would be interested in such a bad deal. No upgradeability.

Not worth it, imo.

As for the peripherals, I couldn't care less as I avoid VR at all costs, unless I maybe need it for my profession.
The controller has hall effect sticks. Yeah, whatever. Nothing new anymore.

It's weaker than both a PS5 and the base Xbox series X. Price wise it's going to have to be much lower than a PS5 if it wants to be taken seriously. The appeal of the steamdeck was a handheld PC on the go. There's far less appeal in a potato PC that can only connect to a monitor or TV. Especially if it's pricier. I can only see this succeeding as a low budget entry level device.
they say its specs are based off of the average steam user, what i believe its targeted towards the console audience as a kind of gateway into pc-gaming. just enough to get them on it, plus its just as customizable as a regular pc. and valve has too many fanboys for it to flop

Of course, the important parts won't be upgradeable. The whole point is this thing will play games, no questions asked.

It's not for PC nerds.

I would rather just purchase a good quality gaming PC.

It will play games, but you will still have to make sacrifices, like changing the graphic settings until you get a playable framerate.

What bothers me the most about todays developers is that they take the abundance of performance for granted and simply do not care to optimize anymore or very little.

Games become increasingly bigger in scale and data size without becoming better, and not even being good but in many cases lacking a lot or being rather empty.

Since almost everyone here has played GTA I will take GTA San Andreas and GTV as an example.

Afaik GTAV's map os four times or so bigger than that of San Andreas, yet San Andreas feels bigger and to this day way more diverse and therefore interesting.
The game also is packed with all kinds of easter eggs and mini games whereas GTA V feels incredibly empty after finishing the story.

An insanely annoying feature of GTA V is that once you start buying businesses you will regularely get stupid side missions which will interrupt your free roaming experience amd if you don't succeed in one of those missions your property won't be producing money for a while, iirc.

So, I ended up never buying certain properties during the main mission.

But yeah, ultimately it feels very big and very empty.

My guess it's for third world shitholes
Crap specs, crap OS and probably gonna be dirt cheap
