Skyrim is a game I once enjoyed very much, however, I've realized now after attempting to replay it that most of my enjoyment from Skyrim came from a sense of discovery and not engaging gameplay. I do not think Skyrim is a good game when it comes to actual gameplay. Combat is extremely shallow. The "freedom" and choices you have are very much limited. Your actions have little effect on the world. You can kill an entire village, (outside of the necessary npcs) then pay off the fine and it'll be like nothing ever happened.

The main gameplay loop of Skyrim isn't much better than a movie game when you remove all the padding. Sure, the story itself is fairly entertaining. (Especially the civil war) But it's not good enough to justify replaying the game and neither are the many, many quests. On top of that, there's not enough choices and outcomes to justify replaying the game multiple times either.

Skyrim suffers from the same problem Breath of the Wild does. (Although Skyrim certainly offers more when it comes to content) Once you've beat it once or twice and discovered anything notable on the map, there's little reason to ever replay it. Yes, mods do exist, but I'd rather just play a good game then inject a million mods into a mediocre one.

Discovery and modding are the only real draw of Elder Scrolls, Fallout, etc... games. It's not because the gameplay is any good. I just make it easy as possible to get through it.

I agree. Although, it could be argued that one of the appeals before Oblivion was immersion. With Morrowind and daggerfall especially. I probably would've enjoyed Skyrim more if it actually required you to use directions plus the compass like Morrowind did. At least then it'd be an engaging walking sim.

Walking simulator, I dropped it after a few hours

It's not even a good walking simulator since walking itself is nothing more than filler that you don't even have to bother paying attention to. You could just walk forward following the marker and read a book.

Its a discovery / story game.

Its great in first time, because you straight up discover all new places, and new mechanics, lore and new people.

But you cant do that in your 3. playthrough, so if you discovered most of the locations, and did most of the quests already, its time to move on.

Mindless left click smash simulator

Skyrim is the ultimate casual RPG. It's usually people who don't like video games (people who like Witcher 3, RDR2, or The Last of Us) who praise Skyrim.
