I am generally quite sensitive to loud noises, but when someone is talking I often have to ask them to repeat themselves because I cannot understand what they're saying - whether their words sound slurred, our I just can't understand their dialogue. Does anybody else here experience this?

I've looked into what it could be, and it seems to be an Auditory Processing Disorder. Or at least a difference in brain functions compared to the average person.

In Auditory Processing Disorder, your ears may hear sounds just fine, but your brain has trouble interpreting them - especially speech.

That can feel like:
  • People sound like they’re mumbling or slurring
  • You hear the sound, but it doesn’t click into meaning
  • You need repetition, especially in noisy environments

At the same time, you can still be very sensitive to loud or sudden noises.

I have hyperacusis and tinnitus. Would not recommend.

It could be possible you have hyperacusis though.

I looked into it, but I doubt it.

"Hyperacusis is when normal sounds feel uncomfortably loud or overwhelming. This affects volume tolerance, not clarity."

I only really have the processing kind, even though I am still quite senstive to loud noises.

Yes I can relate, although sometimes, my hearing is very selective. When someone talks to me I often don't understand and say, sorry? But at the same time I also often overhear negative comments, not even said loudly, in noisier environments. So yes, I am sensitive to loud noises and often don't understand (audibly) what someone says to me, but I overhear stuff in the wrong instance unfortunately.

Ah, a swing and a miss. Well I tried.

Shutty thing about alot of hearing issues is there is nothing Kent's can do alot of the time. I would still recommend you find a good ENT though, just in case.

You to? I have tinnitus as well it hit me hard a few years ago due to excessive headphone use. Its tolerable, how did you get your health condition?

this is one of the symptoms of autism. I have this too, but not to this extent. Sometimes I hear speech with a delay.Sometimes I can't hear someone even though he is next to me.

I've had numerous ear problems when I was young, I had a chronic ear infection at 20 that gifted me the tinnitus though

19 years and thankfully it hasn't gotten any worse.

I can relate, I over hear negative comments that weren’t even aimed in my direction, yet I can’t make our clear words aimed straight at me.

A true mystery, isn't it?

I'm in a similar situation, but certain quiet noises can be irritating, such as hearing laughter in another room.

I can relate, especially when trying to fall asleep
