Thalmor won The Great War and a concordat was signed between the Empire and the Aldmeri Dominion/Thalmor (high elves) outlawed Talos worship in Cyrodill hereby making Imperials their puppets.

They wished to do the same with Skyrim but the Nords weren't that easy to defeat and brainwash.

They aren't the victim, they are a strong mage race who plan on taking over whole of Tamriel.

Imperials aren't rly globohomo equivalent even though reddit writers will probably make them such in the next installment. IIRC there isn't even proper racemixing in TES aside from very few cases (normally the offspring inherits the race from the mother). Similarly Stormcloaks couldn't be farther from real life nationalists movements but reddit wants them to be. The movement starts from an issue of religious freedom and Skyrim isn't even a nation by our standards. I had debates over this when the game was new. One argument they use is that Ulfric is described as an useful idiot in some journal found in the thalmor embassy, but they always leave out that it mentions a stormcloak victory being a bad outcome for the aldmeri dominion just as much as an imperial victory would be. So there's no good or bad CHOice lore-wise as the thalmor want the status quo. Besides, the redguards managed to kick the dominons ass on their own after the great war, so idk why Skyrim should shy away from independence. Especially when you consider that letting ennemy intelligence completely infiltrate a country is not good for national security neither.
