I am gonna be moving from studying software engineering to mining engineering.

Ive looked at dev jobs and its fucking DOGSHIT here in aus unless you are in a FAANG or FAANG adjacent company ( aka big tech ). Ive read juniors getting 60-80k ( more so on the lower end ) and mid level getting 100-120k. Which is not the best for the amount of effort you need. You gotta do your degree + Leetcode + personal projects + networking to even get your foot in the fucking door.

Now if you work at amazon, Atlassian, canva, google, etc you can make like 160k as a junior and like 200k+ as a mid level. Nowhere near US big tech salary but still good. But its insanely hard to get into, you are gonna be competing with everyone in every state as these are the top companies here in aus.

Instead i am gonna do mining and make 140k out of jewniversity. Ill happily take that cause its fucking easy to get jobs. If i stayed in tech i would be making most likely half that shit.

Its sad. If this were like 10 years ago i could have done software engineering and make my way into big tech. But now its wayyy too competitive for even entry level shit tier dev roles.

work at the oil rig, best job for a loner

Smart move tbh
Also even if I grinded like MAD I probably wouldn’t even get into big tech cause they all hire from the most expensive Jewniversites in this country

Meanwhile in mining they don’t give a fuck where you studied.

It's a saturated industry especially thesedays. You'll go great places doing anything else. Get it while you're somewhat young man and don't look back. Hope it all falls into place for you brother.

Thanks bro, that is exactly what I will do. With this career choice it’s a really safe bet and should set me up well.

Good move. Software development is a dead end career now. Between Indians working for pennies and AI being able to write better code than any human in a split second for free with zero effort, the job prospects for developers are dwindling fast anyways.

Definitely not dead end if you are top level & to go to a good school + have connections.

But for everyone else getting into the industry, it is dwindling mainly cause of having way too many grads and few entry level jobs. AI will come and fuck shit up in the future but right now it’s not at that stage. Jeet offshoring is a problem tho and further ruins the entry level job prospects.
