The game will no doubt sell well, but the public reception will be that the game is "mid".

The longer people are left waiting for a game, the higher the expectations are. That's one of the reasons why anytime theres a game that gets hyped up for years and years, it's met with mediocre fanfare when it finally comes out. (Examples: Fable, Duke Nukem Forever, Shenmue 3)

Aside from the fact that Valve already makes an insane amount of money selling other companies games, this is probably one of the main reasons they don't want to make Half-Life 3.

I don't know if I believe that, I suspect they'll make their money back from people preordering and impulse buying on day 1 before criticisms start to pile up. But I am almost 100% convinced people are going to be quickly disappointed even if the game doesn't have technical issues like cyberpunk did. Peoples expectations are sky high and there's no way it doesn't fall way short of them, plus the storyline is very obviously going to be complete dogwater perhaps flop isn't the correct choice of vocabulary, but I don't see an outcome where it doesn't completely miss the mark
