When I was younger and saw this I thought Frank was just being a dick.  Then I realized it was simply not a 2-way conversation but rather a recorded message.  Kubrick maybe never did anything by accident.  I suppose others in our situation have a sense of alienation such that we may feel like this even in real interactions.  I do.
