A 55-stone man has been blocking NHS hospital beds for months but cannot be booted out. Matthew Crawford, who has convictions for assaulting nurses, is medically fit to be discharged but because there is no social care available he cannot leave. Hospital staff have vented their fury at the case of the 33-year-old saying ‘everyone is sick to the back teeth with the situation.’
Mr Crawford is on a four-bed bay on a ward all to himself with all the equipment needed to move him. He has been at Kings Mill Hospital, near Mansfield, Notts, for five months costing the taxpayer thousands. His reinforced bed alone is said to cost £7,000 to rent.
Mr Crawford was convicted of assaulting four nurses at a care home near Newark, Notts, earlier this year. He was unable to attend the hearing because of his size.
