With Sunni Islam major efforts were made to keep it strongly dogmatic. Discussion is gatekept behind a becoming a scholar (which isn’t easy). The opinions of laymen are always discarded.
Even Prophet Muhammad salallahu wa alayhi wa salaam is distinguished by being a Seal of the prophets, meaning further ‘Messiahs’ can be discarded as disbelief. Ofc it wasn’t perfect, there is conflict and Shiites still arose.
However with Christianity anyone can just debate on and completely change the base principles of the religion. Folklore figures are incorporated as saints. Prostitution and alcohol are permitted by major scholars.
What started as a prophet being sent down to preach monotheism to the pagans and advocate against Jewry became corrupted into polytheism (the Trinity) within only a couple hundred years. By early modern era Protestantism exploded which is basically Quranism for Christians. Then Protestantism devolved into atheism and Jew worship.
Whenever innovations arise in Islam there’s always heavy backlash amongst the ulema and wider community. Efforts are immediately made to stamp out the corruption whereas with Christianity it becomes a large sect almost instantly
