“The chance of an impact was seen in 2016 as vanishingly small, at just 1 in 150,000 odds of impact, or a 99.99933% chance the asteroid would miss the Earth. The new findings might slightly change these numbers again, as new calculations are made using both the recent data and new observations that will be made very soon.“

Reminder apophis is named after the greek god of chaos. Give him your energy so that it may cleanse this wretched world in the not so distant future, hopefully before we develop the technology to divert its path

Can't they just destroy it with nukes anyway? Like these countering ICBMs missiles with nuclear warheads, it's only 185m in radius

Nuking asteroids is probably the worst divergence strategy

Damn, the 2029 approach is a close call :

I doubt it. Destroying asteroids/meteors hurling in space is significantly different than destroying places on earth. Even on earth many people tend to overexaggerate the effects of bombs.

This is what the wikipedia article says about that method. Apophis is travelling through space at such fast speed that the effect of a (nuclear) bomb would be quite minisule.

There is other methods though. I like the use of a gravity tractor. The main problem with all of these methods, including the act of creating a bomb powerful enough, is that it would require the resources of every world nation. Something which you only see in sci-fi when there is an alien invasion. Normies rather riot for social justice rubbish than work together for the benefit of humanity. Then there would be the idiots who believe that Apophis is part of a divine plan and would not support any detour plan.

They can do it when it's in the atmosphere not in space, one small bomb can completely evaporate few km of territory in radius, 20kt fully destroys 1km in radius

You are only referencing the surface, what about the mass beneath the surface? This is an asteroid, not a plane of land, so a blast radius would not be an adequate measurement of if a bomb could destroy it. It certainly is possible to eradicate the asteroid with a bomb, but the energy/explosion needed would be great. Much larger than any bomb we currently have and possibly of what we could create. That is why the current option is to detonate the bomb while it is in space in an attempt to divert its trajectory.

Again, I think you are overestimating the capabilities of the bombs we have or have used. Look at pictures of the aftermath of bombs we have used. The destruction caused for those is not enough to fully destroy an asteroid or Apophis.

You don't know what you're talking about JFL
This is what you would realistically expect from a nuke.
104-kiloton - 390 m wide,98 m deep crater after being buried 200m underground

I think our best option is to plant thruster drones on asteroids to divert its path rather than using nuclear bombs which we have no idea what the effect would be. I heard russia is going to attempt to blow up an asteroid soon

There was supposed to be a meteor this year too

Never happened :feelsjuice:

Since it have such low chance to hit Earth, they might use missiles to divert the asteroid to try to let it hit Earth.

[Lifefuel] tbh jfl at people that think technology is advanced enough to save them and they can just nuke an asteroid without unforeseen consequences.

Can't it just hit in 2029 ffs, I definitely won't be alive in 2068...

fucking Goa'ulds

Possibly. I think any of the 'mainstream' methods is better than the nuclear/bomb option. I also think the best option is to try an attempt while on the asteroid's close pass by of Earth in 2029. It is good that the Russians are trying something, hopefully we learn something from it since this niche part of science is not well known.

I honestly cannot wait until all you narcissistic pieces of human garbage die

That's probably around about the time when I'm going to die anyway.

Honestly the best course of action is probably not to destroy it - which would probably require a very large warhead in space. Also quite dangerous given we don't have much data on its composition.

The better plan would probably be to detonate smaller warheads in proximity to one of its sides to give it a small "nudge" in a certain direction which will make it less likely to impact the earth but honestly at that point given the time we have covering it with a solar sail, painting it black to change its albeido or attaching an ion or chemical rocket engine to it might be better.

agreed. climate change and overpopulation is better bet imo
Biden has promised to tackle climate change.

The apocalypse is canceled.
Should have voted Trump.

hope it hits my house directly

i will be dead100% before 2068 tbh anyways good news for youngercels and future incels.

Not soon enough
