There are a lot of Chinese immigrants where I live so it'd be cool to learn it and try to make some ricecel friends. I know it's hard, but I wouldn't aim at fluency, only B1 level at max and only talking and listening, I wouldn't try to learn the writing system.
The main problem is that I found out most Chinese here come from Guangzhou and their native language is usually Cantonese or Taishanese and not Mandarin. I guess they know some Mandarin, but what good would it be for me to learn it if it's not the language they actually use to communicate among themselves? Are those native Cantonese and Taishanese speakers fluent at Mandarin at least? There are barely any resources to learn any Sinitic language that's not Mandarin.
