Global warming melted the Arctic ice cap, which raised global sea levels so that coastlines were flooded. As a result, many ancient cities disappeared beneath the ocean, and much of what was once highland was transformed into chains of new islands. The responsibility for establishing and exploring these new frontiers is given to a select group of people, who are the captains of the ocean mobile bases known as Arks.
The game has three factions: The Eden Initiative (known as "Ecos"), Global Trust (known as "Tycoons"), and SAAT (known as "Techs"). Ecos are environmental and build sustainable cities, but they are inefficient and slow to expand. Tycoons are diligent and expand quickly, but have problems with pollution and dwindling resources. Tech is a support faction available to the other two, and they are useful in researching the latest and most powerful technologies.
Tycoons Faction:
Tycoons are highly versatile and excel at rapid growth. The Tycoons avoid the inefficiencies, inflexibility, and naive pipe-dreams of the Ecos. The Tycoons are confident with their technologies which, through prudent implementation, ensure sufficient control of the environment while maximizing production and profit. The Tycoons are affiliated with Global Trust Inc., the biggest provider of energy on the planet. Tycoons can increase production further, produce more power and lessen their harm to the Ecobalance by working with Techs, researching their technology, and building Tech Buildings. The Tycoons can build the most powerful and devastating units in Anno 2070: the Colossus and the Nuclear Missile. The Tycoons contrast the Eco faction. This faction is led by Skylar Banes, CEO of Global Trust.

Eco Faction:
The Ecos base their cities on living in harmony with the environment and using sustainable resources instead of mass consumption. They are therefore a great contrast to the Tycoons. Ecos are highly capable of preserving and harnessing the benefits of nature and the Ecobalance, providing bonuses to efficiency and revenue. Negative Ecobalances however have a severe effect on populations and production. It is revealed that they work with the Eden Initiative, the leading environmental agency, which is gaining popularity thanks to its green technology. Ecos can increase production and efficiency from working with Techs and researching their technologies. This faction is commanded by the Eden Initiative, whose leader is Seamus Green.

They enable a player to go underwater to build cities there. Techs are the sole faction that can build underwater, although they require terrestrial housing. Examples of Tech Buildings are the Laboratory and the Academy. The Techs work for S.A.A.T. The Techs' leader is F.A.T.H.E.R., their powerful AI. They are the international scientific community in the year 2070.

So, which faction would you choose to live in in the year 2070? Personally, I would choose Tycoons.
