When they ran out of volunteers for the army after two years of war, they started recruiting random guys on the street and mobilizing them into the Ukrainian army. To prevent all men from fleeing, the Ukrainian government closed the borders for men aged 18-60 at the beginning of the war. So, even if you don't have a wife or children and you don't want to fight, the government will find a way to force you to fight against your will. The same goes for Russia, which recruits soldiers by having the police plant drugs on random people and then giving them a choice between 15 years in a maximum-security prison or being sent to war.
