It's not a coincidence many experts are warning that the US is losing the tech race to China when the former has weaker industries traditionally dominated by men while the latter subsidizes and expands the industries associated with STEM fields that are predominantly inhabited by males.

To make a long story short, many companies have made their STEM personnel disposable so your job ends as soon as the project does and then you have to hope you have another similar job lined up at a different company which is probably going to do the same thing to you. Most STEM jobs in the private sector are largely gig or contractual positions now with horrible pay and few to no benefits.
