Political paranoia in the immediate aftermatch of the Russian Revolution + barbarity like this is endemic to commies (they engaged in similar nevels of niggery in the Spanish Civil War) + this:
Many "ordinary" chekists were former peasants, which is not the most pleasant type. But more importantly they were communists who believed in the bright future of communism, which in their view was inevitable. That is, you can accelerate its advent and write off the extremes as the intensifying class war. For them the end goal justifies the means because in the end you go to the proletariat heaven - communism.
The Chekists were fanatics of communism, they sincerely considered themselves knights of the revolution, and that the people they were killing were bourgeois, parasites and exploiters, counter-revolutionaries, of course, they ruthlessly destroyed their enemies.
