why is ADL called Anti-Defamation League?

I remember first finding this organization when I was searching up what defamation means. I then looked for organizations that you can consult if you were to be defamed out of curiosity. so when I found this organization I wouldve never guessed it has to do with jews and combatting anti-semitism. infact it seems to be a pro-defamation league to me if you were to state anti-israeli facts. so why is it even called that?
