Every guy that I have met irl that likes anime has always been an ugly skinny / fat nerd. What attracts subhumans to anime? Anime artists are very blackpilled when it comes to facial aesthetics, the characters always have great angularity and perfect bone structures, do you never feel mogged by the characters or do you not care because it's 2d? The only anime shows that I've ever watched were Yugioh and Pokemon because they were on mainstream tv for me as a kid.

Humans need some cope. I don't like anime , but I'm assuming anime serves as a good cope for people who have nothing.

A lot of anime main characters tend to have personalities that align with incels. shy, meek, perverted and generally autistic to some extent, however instead of being ostracized for those traits, they tend to have a harem of women wanting to be with them in order to bring them out of their shell and a solid loyal group of male friends who love them and respect regardless.

You live vicariously through the characters?

A great part of it is wish fulfillment: harem anime where you bang/seduce many girls and anime with an OP MMC come to mind.
A smaller part of it is because there are many anime which have come out in the last 30 years that are judged by many to be consistently better than western TV series. Such shows aren't typically mainstream, though a great number of them are.

The anime/manga artstyle is heavily westernized but there are a few authors who draw asian faces, typically in more psychological stories, where the art itself is a means to convey a message.

Also I think historically there is a pipeline of

Having other nerdy interests => Being bullied => Use the Internet for social life => Discover anime/manga on forums => Start watching it => Like it

provides an escape of sorts. I watch it as well as western cartoons for comfort.

It's a popular thing and people want to be apart of something

Normies also watch anime now bcs it’s trendy

You get to live and watch situations that you’d never be in and imagine how you’d react in those situations. Its kinda sad but just let people have their fun

Most anime protagonists are written so that they could be a fit in into the viewer. You can imagine yourself as the character, or at least get hyped up, where he overcomes his next challenge, a rival. It's a way to relieve something you could never overcome irl. During the fight with Neji and Naruto, where Neji kept calling him a useless loser, talking about "destiny" (which u can interpret as the blackpill), I was cheering for Naruto the whole time, and he wins. This shit doesn't happen irl, even though it should.
When it comes to appearance, an anime character is never drawn to be ugly, which is blackpilling, but how i combat this is I just believe that is how the average character looks in that anime (with the exception of older people or fatter people that sometimes are shown)
