As far as the 9 tails becoming less menacing by the end of the show, that is the point of the character. Originally it was feared as the 9 tailed fox demon and dehumanized (ik it's not human but it practically has a human personality). But during the war arc Naruto befriends it and learns it's name, Kurama, as opposed to calling it a demon. Naruto peaks during the war arc. Just read the manga instead of the anime, the anime was ass and a money grab.
