Back then... so we got Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. I didn't really like the latter as it felt so emo and at the time that was the "in thing" and so it just felt like it was jumping on that bandwagon.
Wind Waker sure was cel-shaded and cute but it didn't look GAY did it. It was just... whimsical and stuff. An experiment, surely. We had lots of more normal-looking Zeldas since then.
As a game Twilight Princess sucked too but since it was in the realistic style the fans prefer it I believe became the biggest selling Zelda game of all time at least until BOTW was released.
