It truly astonishes me.
The expansion of the Roman Empire incorporated many eastern Mediterranean people, which, therefore, caused them to be infected with more oriental/Semitic influences within its borders. There was also the Arab conquests (the establishment of the Emirate of Sicily) during the 900 AD and the expansion of the Fatimid Caliphate as well. All of these have impacted their genomes by infecting them with Levantine/North African blood. There also existed the Messinian Salinity Crisis (5.96-5.33 million years ago), which did caused the Mediterranean Sea to dry up, which connected Sicily to Africa. Lastly, the Byzantine Empire’s rule over Sicily from the 6-9th centuries further deepened ties to the Orient.

Sicilians also share cultural traits with Arabs, cuisine, language, architecture, art, agriculture, and societal structures, due to Arab rule from the 9th-11th centuries as already mentioned. Most of Sicily (except, possibly, the extreme northeast) has also been a part of the African tectonic plate since (at least) the Triassic period. This is partially why Sub-Saharan African ancestry in Sicilians averages around 7-9%.
The truth must be spoken.
