If you don't know what kyc means it's "Know Your Customer" generally used by financial institutions and businesses to make sure there's no fraud or money laundering going on. The thing about is it's pushed on almost EVERY service you use online and not just financial ones (which is understandable) but does social media really need kyc? like do i really need to hand over my phone number every time i wanna open an account? It seems that all of this shit is just being used to collect more aggregate user data to sell to third party advertisers and feed algorithms.

What are your thoughts?

KYC is just a way to get, store and maintain even better records of who you are and you're data online. if services are too be free than its only expected that the companies are going to take something from you in return

If the service is free then you're the product they said.

They need to make sure your not a “spam bot” or just to make sure you’re a human, and then they gather that data up and sell it to other 3rd parties. Just another loophole for harvesting data ig.

I should probably stop using google voice and actually use a VoIP number or something.

Basically how it works, its too expensive to maintain these products for free most of the time and these companies have to get money some how so they sell you're data to the highest bidder

captchas exist but I guess those don't work well enough do they?

yeah, i wonder how THIS site still has the money to run it's operations considering it used to run ads for porn sites before long ago.

your number is already accessible to anyone so no point in hiding it

I imagine the owner of this site can actually get away a bit with not needing any stable funding since forums are typically one of the cheapest to host but yeah i'd always bring any caution to something that is run for free, they almost always are storing and selling the data because it sells for a lot as long as its useful for advertisements etc

i can just smash my sim card and it's gone. you don't need a phone number anyways especially when there's voip services everywhere unless you have to work.

Well bots are getting smarter now, especially with AI. Also, most services and businesses just want to track your behavior, monetize, and just control your data.

So now they can just pull the AI is getting smarter for captchas and we need THIS to identify who you actually are. Whether it’s giving up your phone number, or email so that way they can just personalize ads to your and harvest more info out of you as well.

It’s a damn shame I wasn’t born in a time when the internet used to have a lot anonymity and you could pretty much say anything without having anything traced to you.

And now with YouTube using AI to guess your age based of what you search and watch, that’s pretty gay ngl.

Data mining is very profitable. Why knowing the pennies I spend on anything is worth it, I don't know.
