Why are people obsessed with "fair fighting" ?

I don't get the idea of fair fighting, for thousands of years our ancestors have been inventing more efficient weapons to have an advantage over the other person/tribe/country but nowadays if somebody starts beating you and you stab them or shoot them everybody labels you as a coward and a weakling, I always looked at fair fighting as a LOW IQ thing because the most important thing in a physical conflict is to SURVIVE not follow some man made rule that is useless.

If it's fighting for sport I kinda get it, but in a life or death situation it's a silly thing to care about. Even then, there will always be an attribute that will give you an advantage such as muscle mass and fighting experience.
