I haven't but the part where it looks like your PC is being hacked would give me flashbacks from ages ago when Porn sites would ransomwhere me.

My family PC didn't have subscription virus protection which is just sooooooooo idiotic.

I used to imagine Sayori being my girlfriend for a while
I still love her but I've moved on and accepted what happened to her

i played it for like 5 mins but there is too much dialogue so i didnt continue

I love natsuki so much

Don't really like visual novels so I didn't play it, seems like one of the better ones though

Let’s just say I’m a big fan of Monika.

I played the game ages ago, and the moment I still remember is when the main char is feeding Yuri chocolate while reading a book with her.

It's probably one of the best western visual novel style games, but it's still mediocre when compared to the rest of its genre

I "played" a lot of visual novels, and i can tell you besides file manipulation , other vns have way better stories and real choice driven paths and plots, ddl is just painfully mediocre without the gimmicks

Ah I see i'll take your word for it, closest thing to a VN games I like were stuff by telltale when I was younger

Early telltale games are definitely better in my opinion, the first walking dead and the wolf among us in particular, but it's still a far cry from the original style of japanese visual novels

Yeah they were peak also really liked tales from borderlands and i'm not even a fan of that franchise lol

I only watched the whole thing on YouTube years ago, I just goon to the foids

I played it many years ago and don't remember much about it.

Babies first visual novel
I read that crap when I was 10

I have it from ps plus but I haven't played it yet, don't really like visual novels.

I have played it only on Youtube. Even when I had a laptop I didn't bother to replay this because the story was already spoiled years ago and I didn't liked it *that* much anyway

Mid Visual Novel really but I personally like Yuri and her whole decomposing action

Years ago, only ever got up to the suicide part

the scene where Yuri "looks " at you through the screen is so scary

what other VN's have you played
Bible black, majikoi, to heart, imouto paradise, baldr sky, ciconia, kimi ga nozomu eien, air, chaos head, cross channel, world end economica, nekopara

3/10 VN

Should be lower, its like 1.5 hours long
It would have to be abysmal to be lower. It’s got a super short and underdeveloped cast and a boring, generic plot that’s just Totono but without the development. That being said, a 2 or a 1 would have to be something really bad, not just mediocre

That makes no sense. A 5/10 is mediocre. That’s literally what the middle of the scale is for. A 3/10 means "bad". If your description is "boring, generic, underdeveloped, derivative, and shallow", you already argued for a lower score yourself. If something is short, underwritten, derivative, and failed at what it was trying to do, then low scores are exactly what the lower end exists for.

No. A 5/10 would be something that is solely fine, nothing too interesting but nothing necessarily bad about it. Like Horizon.
DDLC sits at 3/10 because it’s boring and generic, suffers from short VN syndrome. But it’s not bad, it’s nothing interesting and generally a forgettable experience that I disliked.
A 2/10 would have to actually be BAD, which is rare in media. The two easiest examples I could pull out would be Solo Leveling, which is a complete and utter power fantasy with terrible writing, and Hello Neighbour, which manages to have the buggiest gameplay in all of gaming. 2/10’s are BAD, DDLC is not bad it is just generic and boring. Like a shonen anime.

And your favorite out of these? Looking for a new romance one to play.

Your scale is completely inflated. Youre describing ddlc as boring, generic, forgettable, underdeveloped, derivative, something you actively disliked. And somehow that translates to not bad.
That IS bad.
A 5/10 is average. A 3/10 is significantly below average. If you think something is forgettable, shallow, and unenjoyable, then congratulations, you think it’s bad.
Youre also contradicting yourself with the nothing interesting point because ddlcs entire reputation exists because of the meta horror twist. You can dislike the execution, but calling it generic is funny when the game literally became famous for subverting generic VN structure.
And your examples make the scale even weirder. "Power fantasy with terrible writing" and "buggy gameplay" being 2/10s doesn’t suddenly make ddlc immune from low scores. Different kinds of bad exist. Something can be technically functional and still deserve a terrible score because the experience itself is empty.
By your logic, the most offensively dull media imaginable can never go below a 3 because well it functions.

A 3/10 is not a good rating in any way?? I disliked playing it and wouldn’t recommend it. You’re arguing that I am looking at a rating for a purely emotional standpoint. I hated Horizon Zero Dawn, I would’ve given it a 1 in enjoyment. But the game in of itself is fine, so for me it’s a capped 5 because the actual game is not badly made.
Same with DDLC, there is nothing in it that would make me put it at a 1 or a 2. Yuri and Natsuki are just generic baseplate characters, but they’re not badly written. If they had tons of contradictions and terrible dialogue then sure, they would be BAD characters and that could lower DDLC’s rating. But they’re not bad, they’re boring. DDLC is a 2 hour indie game, there is nothing reason for me to give it a lower rating than a 3 because it doesn’t do many things badly and it still has some good mixed in with it. Any experience I would actually put in a 2/10 would need to have such minimal good things and actually be inherently terrible. You could go down to a 1 or a 0 or whatever but 2 is where “exceedingly bad” starts. I emotionally l disliked DDLC but the game in of itself is not bad enough to warrant such a low score.

DDLC’s twist was not creative in any way, Totono had done the exact same thing years prior, and much better and lengthier. It doesn’t subvert anything, context matters for this. If you’ve got 30 IQ and can’t obviously tell that Sayori is going to be dead when she turns suicidal overnight (Bravo, Dan. Nice pacing), + have avoided spoilers for a decade and stumbled upon this game randomly, then MAYBE you would be surprised at Sayori’s suicide. There are tons of dark visual novels (and are typically the best in the medium) that do similar things to DDLC. It only got famous because it released during the inception of horror games made for kids (Baldi, Bendy), it’s incredibly short and simple to understand and it’s not eroge.

That being said, I have tons of issues with DDLC which is why it scales at a 3, but none of the characters or the game is objectively bad. There are some things that I like about DDLC. Sayori’s short lived depressive arc was well written. The concept itself is good although never built upon. DDLC would have to have none of this to constitute a 2 or a 1. It’s generally mediocre and unenjoyable with hints of something that could’ve been bigger within there. If you asked me what I liked about Hello Neighbour, maybe the artstyle? That’s about it. A media that is “offensively dull” could go below 3/10 if the characters are badly written, if not then I see no reason to put it lower than a 3.

You talk about ratings like a guy whos terrified of sounding biased, so you overcorrect into saying absolutely nothing.
Your entire argument boils down to:
"DDLC failed at engaging me in almost every way, but I respect that the files opened correctly."
And the Horizon example made it even worse because you admitted youd rate a game you HATED as average purely out of fear of giving low scores to something technically polished. That’s score inflation caused by pseudo intellectual guilt.
Youve trained yourself to confuse craftsmanship with value. A sterile, boring experience can absolutely deserve a terrible score even if it’s competently assembled. Otherwise every forgettable Ubisoft game becomes immune to criticism because "well the animations work."
