I find a good way to actually asses a countries native population is by looking at the Military: I know Russia is big & very diverse, but I imagine most of the military volunteers would be actual Slav Russians, not some minor group such as Tatars.
From this pic, it seems they look distinctly White/European, though I can tell their facial-features & skull-shape apart from other groups on Europe.

I know a Germancel here who is 1/4 Russian, as well as another user who is 1/2 Russian.
That's why I said I would use military pictures, think about it: Someone who actually is from that country, has some deep-roots in it, and clearly has some kind of love for that country enough to fight for it likely would be an actual Native of the country & actually from the main group which is dominant in the country.

It's impossible to compare two countries without looking at their history and geography.
Of course West European countries who were protected from the invasion and influence of the Eastern powers such as Mongols or Turks had the most chances to develop science, culture, literature etc.
