Which type of person is more annoying? NPCs or pathological contrarians?

Between these two types of people who is more annoying?

The NPC: Has all of the same opinions as mainstream media, reddit, etc. Always "supports the current thing". Thinks he's "on the right side of history". Invokes ad populum in arguments Will change his opinion on a dime to match mainstream opinion.

The pathological contrarian: Feels the need to have a "hot take" on absolutely every issue. Extremely neurotic. Jumps at the opportunity to make anything into a "debate". Thinks he's always the smartest in the room. Will change his opinion on a dime if any of his positions get too popular. He absolutely LOVES counter-intuitive theories, the more counter-intuitive the better. The people who preach "oofy doofy theory" are the ultimate example of this.

Neither of them tries creating a worldview based on the pursuit of absolute truth. It's all about how their opinions (and the presentations thereof) compare to the general public.

I was originally going to make "both are equally annoying" as an option but decided against that because I want this to be binary dilemma where there's a clear "winner".

It depends on who you are yourself. Everything comes from the ego. The NPC is afraid of social backlash, the contrarian fears control, the truly independent free thinker still seeks acknowledgement/approval for his opinions. If someone annoys you they are likely shattering the identity you've built and unmasking you.

If you're an NPC you'll be annoyed by both the contrarian and the free thinker, by going against the mainstream narratives you've accepted at face value, they're essentially calling you a slave and making you feel personally attacked. They're usually people who have been traumatized by being ostracized in the past.

If you're a contrarian, you perceive anything that aligns with the mainstream as a threat to your autonomy. You'll reduce the free thinkers to NPCs and feel as if their opinions are an attempt to control you. They're usually people who have been traumatized by authority.

If you're a very loud free thinker, you feel the need to establish some kind of intellectual superiority by constantly feeling the need to disprove other people. They're the debate bros who will start an argument at the Christmas dinner table so as they may be perceived as smart. They're usually people who don't feel inherently valuable and seek external validation.

Some free thinkers are truly unbothered, but I believe them to be extremely rare.

I personally adopt both the contrarian and very loud free thinker identities due to how much mainstream narratives have worsened my life and my insecurities caused by those narratives. I'll say the NPCs are the most annoying simply because they hold the most power, they will start witch-hunts over minor disagreements.

i would say the npc is more annoying, the contrarian at least tries to see things from a different perspective (even though he’s just trying to be different), but the npc just blindly listens to what the majority believes and never challenges it which is a big problem nowadays. Also i would say that the contrarian forces you to think on why you believe the things that you do. A lot of people blindly believe stuff that they were taught as kids but they don’t know why. I would say that it’s necessary for someone to be able to defend and justify their beliefs and the contrarian helps with that.
