With political extremism rising like crazy, when will the final straw come? I'd say conditions are almost right enough but there must be some great catastrophe like an assassination, major terrorist attack or economic collapse.

Ethnocentrism exists even among race. As pointed above Irish and Italians were lynched by Anglos in early America, Zulus in SA do xenophobic attacks on Blacks from Nigeria which they hate and so on. In places like Singapore there has even been legislation passed to ensure the multitude of asian races there don't discriminate against eachother.
