In my opinion, all fifth-generation and earlier systems are retro. The threshold is not based on age, but rather on what I consider to be the particular technical characteristics of these consoles compared to sixth-generation and later consoles. Specifically, I believe there is a sufficient stylistic difference between fifth- and sixth-generation consoles, which I don't think exists to the same extent for sixth- and seventh-generation consoles or beyond.

The sixth generation also saw the rise of some of the game styles that still dictate the games we play today. I've never understood those who consider the PS2 and PS3 to be retro, I guess they're just zoomers who base their view of vintage on time alone.

Definitely till 5th gen games are less complex the focus is on the gameplay and still nobody figured out how to create a standardized control scheme, 6th gen plays 90% like of the modern games they figured out controls and gameplay loop is identical to modern titles, 7th gen is 95% like modern games (minus the dogshit battle passes and gacha ofc) it even introduced dlcs.

Zoomers of 4chan/vr can cope that ps5 and 2005 games are now retro but we both know it's total bs and they are just poor victims of being born past gold era of video games while for millennials they were the first era of amazing games that felt modern but they still could compare it to the previous gens as far as 3rd or 4th, ps2/ps3 will never be retro to me since they have same vibe as modern games that's why they are remaking and remastering them so often without much changes to the gameplay and graphics often are just barely changed

Just look at this shit:

Agreed

The sixth generation also moved from Quake-influenced shooters to slower-paced games with limited weapon carrying and also popularizing the use of vehicles in FPS games beyond the simple reproduction of rail-based shooting mechanics ; Grand Theft Auto III and its sequels forged the attributes of third-person open-world action-adventure, as well as the beginnings of what became gargantuan series such as Call of Duty and Battlefield.

The PS2 really marked the beginning of the casualization of video games and the introduction of long cutscenes.

The best delineation I've heard for retro qualification is that Dreamcast is the last because that was the last largely arcade port based console. Although, PS2 had a fair amount as well, so...

Another is that the Dreamcast was the first online console that had any real popularity, so that ended retro. And that aligns with 3D gaming not looking like total shit.

Dreamcast is clearly a previous generation for which the publishers released a series of slightly improved psx games. Similarly, I also consider the GameBoy Advance to be retro, with all its Snes game ports and 2D graphics.

I'd consider everything before the PS2 to be retro. Anyone that considers the PS3 and XBOX360 to be retro must be about 14 years old. Those games still look pretty modern.

Sixth generation and earlier. Basically the pre-internet era of gaming, before DLCs and day 1 patches and shit like that. When games had to be released in a complete state and couldn't be fixed with later updates

As I said in my other thread I tend to use the term interchangeably with the word old.

If I had to do it based on the look of the games then I guess I'd say gen 4 or earlier.
