What Does Hypergamy Explain?

I've noticed something about the discussions surrounding hypergamy.

People rarely ask what it explains.

Instead, they argue over whether it explains everything or nothing at all.

I've always found that a strange place to begin

There are almost no ideas that deserve that kind of certainty.

The more I've thought about it, the less interested I've become in proving or disproving it.

Something else interests me.

How does an explanation become so convincing that people stop asking where it ends?

An explanation can be useful without being complete.

The strangest part isn't believing hypergamy exists.

It's believing that once you've accepted it, there's nothing left to understand.

Every rejection has already been explained.

Every relationship has already been interpreted.

Every outcome starts to feel inevitable.

That's the point where I try being cautious.

Status matters.

Appearance matters.

Personality matters.

Timing matters.

Culture matters.

Reducing attraction to a single variable seems just as unconvincing as pretending none of those factors exist.

What interests me isn't whether hypergamy is "real."

It almost certainly captures part of reality.

What interests me is how quickly a partial explanation can become a complete worldview for many individuals.

Once that happens, every rejection feels like confirmation.

Every relationship, post, statistic becomes evidence.

Anything that doesn't fit is treated as an exception rather than a reason to question the framework itself.

I've seen this happen in politics.

I've seen it happen in philosophy.

I've seen it happen in psychology.

I've seen it happen in religion.

Hypergamy isn't unique in that respect.

The more an idea explains, the easier it becomes to ask it to explain everything.

Maybe that's the real question.

Not whether hypergamy exists.

But where does it stop explaining.

Personality matters.

Culture matters.
I don't think these matter.

Personality is just a meme.

Timing doesn't matter, if it was Chad, it would always be the perfect time.

Culture is LARP, none of the foids of X ethnicity/cultural group would care if you're from X ethnicity/cultural group but short & ugly :feelsgah:

You can compare these different philosophies and see where they align with reality tho. For example, if you get 0 pussy as a guy who goes to the gym, has a shit tonne of money, ShOwErZ ect. then the redpill, bluepill and other philosophies are instantly off the table.

Reality itself is the philosophy we must all submit to, Hypergamy is a part of that reality, but it is merely one from of the greater "Inherent Inequality of Life" that can also be seen in Wealth, House Ownership, ect.

The true thing that can explain all of reality is a few basic principles, including
1. All humans are self-interested
2. Everyone works for their interests
3. Humans can be tricked into working for other peoples interests through propaganda, lies or gaslighting
4. Human Preferences are revealed through actions, not words
5. At the top of every power structure is base mafia-esque self-interest at its core

It's not as simple as other philosophies that give a clear goal [e.g. the Workers Revolution in Marxism, or doing the good works taught by Christianity to go to heaven] but you can basically see it written betweeen the lines:
Take what you can,
Give as little as you can,
Make others work for you -

that is all there is

I don't disagree that those principles explain aspects of human behavior.

I just think the moment we believe we've found the framework that explains all of reality, we stop looking for what it can't explain. That's really what the thread was about.

I don't disagree. My whole point was that reality is usually more complicated than any single framework we use to explain it.

If you had to put % values on the importance of the below five attributes for an average relationship in 2026, how much would each contribute:

Status.

Appearance.

Personality.

Timing.

Culture.

I don't think human relationships can be meaningfully reduced to fixed percentages. The importance of each factor changes from person to person and situation to situation.

My point wasn't that they're all equally important. It was that excluding them altogether makes the explanation less complete.

If you think hypergamy isn't a reliable pervasive framework, then why are you an incel?

Wouldn't an equally ugly foid A.K.A your looksmatch be with you and hence you wouldn't be an incel?

This is why I said for an average relationship.

I'm not arguing that hypergamy isn't real or that it has no explanatory value. My thread explicitly acknowledges that it explains part of reality.

What I'm questioning is the jump from "it explains some outcomes" to "it explains every outcome."

Whether I'm incel doesn't resolve that question one way or the other.

I'm not saying those factors always matter the most. I'm saying they still matter. Acknowledging one influence doesn't mean the others suddenly become irrelevant.
They matter, but they’re on the back burner compared to looks and height. Those two (along with status) trump everything else you said.

Why would hypergamy as a concept explain some outcomes but not majority/average of outcomes?

Are you saying that hypergamy on average doesn't affect men in society?

:bluepill:
If I had to guess, appearance and status probably matter more on average than the other three. I just don't think that means personality, timing, and culture contribute nothing. My thread was about that leap, not about denying differences in importance.

No, I'm not saying it doesn't affect men on average. I'm saying I don't think it's enough, by itself, to account for every person's circumstances or every relationship. Recognizing additional influences isn't the same as denying that hypergamy exists or has a significant effect.

In relation to Incel topics, it [or the Blackpill philosophy which it it a part of] DOES explain everything. There are many aspects to life, for example, Marxism claims to be a economic philosophy. Christianity, Islam ect. are Religious philosophies. Some people believe in ONLY Marxism and claim it explains all of life, same for Christianity. Even Vegans claim for Veganism to be a cohesive, wholistic moral philosophy that can answer any question, on par with Christianity or Marxism.

I agree if Marxism is true, it's basically only economically true, and will inevitably fail to accurately describe other aspects of life. Christianity could also be true Religiously, but a Christian might have the wrong economic philosophy due to starting from Religious principles first.

If we divide life into different sectors, e.g. Religion, Economics, Race/Nationality ect. the Blackpill [which includes Hypergamy] describes Sexual Reality perfectly. If you were to take Incel principles somewhere else, then sure maybe they would be wrong, but who does that?

The Truth you are getting at is basically "There are different aspects to life, and different systems describe different parts of life well but not other parts". You should leave it at that, and acknowledge the Blackpill perfectly describes sexual relations. But you're basically saying "welll maybe the Blackpill is wrong because of a secret thing we haven't wound yet", which is ludecrous.

I think that's where we genuinely disagree.

I'm comfortable saying a framework can explain a great deal without calling it a perfect description of an entire domain. "Explains a lot" and "perfectly describes" aren't equivalent claims.

The reason I'm cautious isn't because I'm appealing to some mysterious hidden variable. It's because human relationships involve multiple interacting influences, and I'm not convinced any single framework captures them exhaustively.

That's why I framed the thread as a question about how much hypergamy explains rather than a denial of hypergamy itself.

I think most users here including myself would say that looks/height is a 90%+ affecting influence factor in an overwhelming majority of cases, the only exceptions I've ever seen are extremely wealthy/status-maxxed celebrities but even they're just beta-buxx (they're loved for their money rather than natural love), really isn't a case of multiple interacting influences.

I think this is where we simply disagree. Saying appearance is a major influence is one claim. Saying it explains 90%+ of outcomes in the overwhelming majority of cases is a much stronger claim, and I'm not convinced the evidence justifies that level of confidence.

True, I'm working on my personality, getting a new haircut & taking a few showers. I'll be ascending in no time :kys:

You think you're Pilaf, but in reality you get IQmogged by General Red.

I don't think we're that far apart. I agree appearance matters a lot. I just don't see why acknowledging that means every other factor suddenly stops mattering.
