Russia could have much more easily taken over Ukraine or changed the government there in 2014 when the state of the Ukrainian armed forces was catastrophically bad, instead they waited 8 years for Ukraine to arm itself and become stronger militarily. Russia still trades resources with EU countries and sells uranium and some other stuff to the US, real enemies would never do that. Russia surrendered territories in Kharkiv Oblast and near Kherson as a result of behind-the-scenes negotiations.

It was purely for show. Their tactic of invading from 4 directions with only about 200,000 troops is sheer stupidity, you need around a million of soldiers to do that, It would be smarter to direct the main strike in Donbas, where the most combat-ready units of the AFU are concentrated; by destroying or encircling them, this would deal the most serious damage to them. They also did nothing to block the weapons supplies of the West from Poland, Slovakia and Romania in western Ukraine.
