They'd rather live as orange goop than live in a world where a man has a cause he is willing to die for. This ending is seen as depressing by retards who think everything needs a happy ending all of the time. Really, this is a good ending, Shinji has grown to accept life thorns and all and would rather accept a cold reality where he is an individual than live in a world where he doesn't begin or end.
