Canonically there are more but I understand. When a franchise gose on so long at some point they run out of ideas.

This is absolutely correct. 
Pokemon designs nosedived after Gen 1. Monsters used to be simple, and now they are just a convoluted mess.
Look at merchandising who the hell would want to buy a new (much less try to create) a plushie of a random-ass abomination of a new monster .

Based opinion
well they were simple and cool so I understand why they want to keep it that way
Gen 1 mons are overrated tbh, Gen 3 and 4 had the best designs.
I hate how Gen 1 relies so much on "just make it bigger" and "add another head" for the evolutions
