I've noticed that a lot of people on my political side of the spectrum are not the biggest fans of homeless people. Granted, they're usually not the most savoury characters, but I'd rather know concretely why.

you cant even tell most homeless people are homeless because they go to work and dress normally, a lot of them live in their cars and shit. You have giga selection bias by only recognizing those that visually stand out. A huge amount of homeless are also not drug addicted, thats also a misconception

The next thing is that most drug users are highly functional and quit on their own, around 80%. Most herion addicts that came back from vietnam quit on their own. This has also been academically investigated. Its also worth noting that hard drugs were not illegal in the US until the 1940s, yet did not cause social issues.
One reason could be that its the social circumstances and environment that fucks up peoples lives and drugs are just a side effect of that. The image of the fucked up looking perma-addict comes from a strong selection bias because its only these people that even go to rehab clinics. Most drug users dont even show up in stats.
