I've read stories where a guy's girlfriend wants one and the guy agrees, thinking it means he can have sex with more people. The effects are, of course, the girl has as much sex as she wants but the guy's alone at home.

I have problem with targeting of naïve men with the lure of more sex when the exact opposite is going to happen to him. It's a complete win for the girl in how she gets to have her cake and eat it too: she gets the sex as if she was single, and she gets whatever cuck support since she's still in the relationship.
