I want to start off by saying that my boyfriend is wonderful and very supportive when it comes to my diabetes. He keeps me stocked up on low blood sugar snacks, he helps me change my site if I do need help, and he follows me on my dexcom (at his request). But I don't think he understands how serious diabetes actually is? And I'm not sure how to explain it to him? The reason I say this is because today while I was at work, my pump ran out of insulin. I packed extra pump supplies, but of course I forgot my insulin (). I was telling him how I forgot it and he didn't really seem too concerned. He just asked if I was gonna be okay and if I felt okay. Then when I got off, I saw he texted me asking me to let him know when I got off and when I got home. I called him when I saw his text and I was telling him how tired I was and how sick I felt bc my blood sugar was high. He was genuinely surprised to hear that I felt as sick as I did and that I was having such an awful time. I told him it was because I didn't have my insulin. Then later on, I was telling him how there was only 4 hours between the time my pump ran out of insulin to the time I felt sick. He said "oh, so you need insulin all the time." That's when it hit me that he doesn't fully understand the condition that I have. So how do I go about explaining to him that I have a chronic condition and just how serious it is ? Without making him feel like a child and without making him feel bad about his lack of knowledge about diabetes.
