MPs have been found to disrupt the reproductive endocrine system by disruptingthe HPG axis (Wang et al.,2019). After exposure to PS-MPs, the serum levels offollicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and testosterone(T) in male mice decreased, and the estradiol level increased, while the changesin serum FSH and T levels in female mice were reversed (Wei et al., 2022).Similar results werefound in male rats (Ijaz etal., 2021). Therefore, the reproductive endocrine disorder induced byMPs may be caused by disrupting the HPG axis and steroid production pathway,disrupting the balance of sex hormones and delaying gonad maturation, which maybe the potential mechanism of MPs hindering the development of embryos andprogeny (Wang et al.,2019).
