People talk as if games never stop developing and becoming more advanced which isn't true at all outside of graphics. When it comes to actual gameplay, games have become lazier and lazier.

"Open world" and "freedom" are two buzzwords used to excuse lazy game design. Just copy and paste the same content repeatedly and then give normies the "freedom" to do it any order and they'll call it amazing. Compare Dark Souls to Elden Ring. Dark Souls is obviously the better game in almost every regard. The world is carefully hand-crafted and interconnected intelligently. Elden Ring is lazy copy past slop that lacks any meaningful level design.

I assume that it's much easier for developers to opt for this kind of design due to how hard it is to make a game comparable to the ones that came out in the PS4/360 era with modern graphics.

Nintendo is very much guilty of this lazy design. I've already made multiple rants on here about the issue. All I'll say about it is that BOTW and Mario Odyssey are lazy when it comes to their content.

Another example of lazy game design is movie games. They have the opposite issue of open world slop. Last of Us kicked off this trend. They tend to have overly simplistic hallway level design with a large focus on dialogue and cutscenes. Compare RE4 to RE4 remake if you want to see the issues with movie games.

I'd even argue that the overabundance of souls clones is an example of lazy game design. Dark Souls combat was incredibly simple. After all, it is a action jrpg and not a traditional action game. It's become the default combat system to copy imo because it's incredibly easy to do so. Just allow the player to roll and parry and you're all set. Don't bother trying to create your own combat system that would actually suit your game. Rolling around in a lightsaber fight is totally immersive dude. Parrying a chainsaw with a knife is so fitting of Resident Evil bro...

It feels like the gaming industry just stopped coming up with new ideas and we've been stuck with the same mechanics regurgitated repeatedly. Honestly, I'm sick of hearing "this game is like these two games"
I want new experiences. There are so many cool things that could be done that won't be done because devs are more interested in copying trends.

For example, a sword fighting game with actual good sword combat. The only games we've seen like this are Wii games. We know from Skyward Sword HD that it can be done without motion controls. Yet, no one has bothered to try because they'd rather just make a fantasy game with roll-slop combat.

It's all so tiring.

Copy and paste, make the graphics shinier, sprinkle some globohomo on top, then slap an $80 price tag on the turd. Normfags flock like sheep to buy it.

 :bigbrain:

fan content like rom hacks have way more innovative gameplay than vanilla

Better graphics = Hardware can handle more triangles. Game developers deserve none of the credit for "good graphics."

That’s why you stay in the Xbox 360 era

Open world = just copy a street bro

Actual level design takes experience, artisan design, aesthetics, difficultly and many other factor.

Modern "developers" just copy-paste old games and pretend they reinvented the wheel. It's been happening since the PS3 / 360 days, it was just less noticeable. By the time the next gen after came around, that's when "noticers" started noticing. IT's the same with comic books as well. You don't need actual artist to draw comics, they've been cheating their way thru that shit for years.

You know that feeling when you’ve played enough games to look around a scene, and just automatically know a gun battle or boss battle is going to take place…

Honestly gets boring after a while, this is why I like horror games, they keep it fresh.

sounds like there is too many option just wait for the best games cuase no one remmber the medicore retro games only the popular good ones

play the popular old games that people remeber that same thing will happen to modern games when they get old

i dont mind copy cats since one of them might copy a fourmla and make it better plus copy cats will cuase more competion look at fornite and pugb now pubg is free to play on every platform even if you hate fornite you cant lie that they cuase competion for pubg

Rockstar is example of this , all there gameplay is the same and offers nothing new. GTA and Red Dead Redemption are different eras but same mechanics.

They fucking ruined the new Outcast.

Now it's just wandering around a massive empty ubishit with stupid tasks thrown about randomly instead of the interesting and interconnected world that you could puzzle through and freely travel between. Quests and tasks had context to make them interesting now it's just "fly through hoops!"

Massive fucking disappointment.

The era of passion and lover for games is so dead for game monopolys. I wouldnt say indie is were its good but smaller studios tend to give way more fucks. STALKER to me is way more fun then fallout was. Ready or Not is way fucking better then Rainbow 6 Seige. Project TH looks like itt do what splinter cell stopped doing since splinter cell is no longer a thing according to ubisoft. And Im sure theres a good enough replace ment for ghost recon.

If you want a better alternative to assasins creed, both of the STYX games are fucking hood. 2nd games way better then the first though.

The best thing to do is to avoid mainstream games as those are the fucking slop shit. Go for the smaller ish studios who actually gives a fuck about what they make.

This is a vent I've had for years and some things I'd like to add to it:

Dark Souls/Elden Ring/TES games- I cannot state how overabundant they are. I always dismissively call them "sword slashers", because it's pretty much all you do. Ever since the 80s, the whole fantasy-potion drinking-spellcasting theme has been done to death. As someone into RPGs, it gets tiring. I wish there were more cyberpunk and sci-fi themes in RPGs. Like technomancy or generally just futuristic themes. Enough fucking wizards already

Open world games- I feel like this is a hangover from the 90s and 2000s. Back then, the concept of an open world game was the ultimate dream for gamers. Being able to explore a vast world with freedom was something in very high demand. Not that it's gone away, but games are overdoing it. Mario Kart doesn't need an open world. And games like Sonic 06 showed that worlds can be too big and just boring. It's become a hallmark of laziness to overinflate the game with a "world" when many times, less is more.
