Critical Analysis of the Efficacy of Meditation Therapies for Acute and Subacute Phase Treatment of Depressive Disorders: A Systematic Review

Results

Eighteen studies meeting inclusionary criteria were identified, encompassing seven distinct techniques and 1173 patients, with Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy comprising the largest proportion. Studies including patients suffering from acute major depressive episodes (N = 10 studies), and those with residual subacute clinical symptoms despite initial treatment (N = 8), demonstrated moderate to large reductions in depression symptoms within group, and relative to control groups.

Just do it. Its free and it works

Best meditation for me is jerking off ngl.

if your depression can be cured by breathing and "aligning your chakras" you were never depressed rather just a schzoid

I always see people like you doubting meditation. Its not the breathing or "chakras" that make you feel better, but the fact that long term meditation can change even the physical structure of your brain. Proven by PET scans. Just like drinking alcohol for a long time can decrease your brain mass, meditation does the opposite, increasing it.

"mindfulness meditation might provide a customizable, easy to use, and remotely practicable method to increase mental resilience and overall quality of life. In order to optimize its application, vigorous efforts have been made to untangle the mechanisms which mediate the benefits of mindfulness meditation. Conceptually, mindfulness meditation is believed to primarily act over three axes: Attention control, emotion regulation, and self-awareness, all of which are cognitive qualities which can be enhanced through regular practice17. Changes in these domains were found to go along with extensive functional and structural alterations in the brain: the most consistent observations were made in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), prefrontal cortex (PFC), posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), insula, and subcortical structures such as the amygdala and the striatum17."

Mediation is very good.

Yes, its very real and it works. You can feel your perception of the world shifting slowly as you begin the habit of meditation. Its too bad but the changes take time to develop.

I've also struggled to do it long term. It can be very hard to concentrate as it is boring as hell. That's probably one reason why it works, as we are facing negative emotions like boredom head-on. Just observing the negative feelings as they come and not reacting to them makes you less reactive to them when you aren't meditating too.

However, I've found that even something as simple as drinking lots of chamomile tea 1 hour before meditating helps me calm down more and I'm able to meditate for longer periods of time. It takes less effort to be able to concentrate then.

interesting
ok if i may contribute my 5 pesos - ive found that you can even "detach" from a feeling like boredom kinda. It sounds weird but you can basically recognize you are feeling it, and then also discard it. Its possible.
For me, a big issue is that I have constant fear of missing out and anxiety from unsafe childhood. So just sitting down and not doing anything is very intimidating for me, it makes me feel unsafe. I need to be occupied or I get anxious.

but in experiments I have done, you can basically recognize feelings like that and actually view them from 3rd person and get rid of them. But you need to focus on your body, where the feeling is in the body etc... and then detach from it. Its like performing soul surgery on yourself.
idk if that makes sense but thats my limited experience with it.

Ive also had lucky breaks where a session was very successful and I basically had no thoughts after. Not in the sense of becoming retarded, but I just very in control of myself for like an hour.

Ok ok, I understand that meditation slightly affects the brain, many things do, but im sick of people who tie meditation to spirtuality. No, deep breathing will not give you an aura by "realigning chakras" (whatever the fuck that means). Meditation just makes you bored and relaxed which in the long run is good for your brain. It does not have any spiritual/universal/astral effects, that is just a schzoid gigacope.

I recognise this feeling too. Not feeling occupied makes me feel anxious also. It could also be that we just feel the need to be stimulated 24/7. Which is not good obviously.

I feel this too, after meditation you become more aware and you have better control over yourself. Maybe it happens because of the increased activity in the prefrontal cortex after meditating.
