reddit is basically just bots shilling products to normies. Keep that in mind when you go there next time.
Many posts have covert product placement, usually embedded in some story. Additionally, many reddit subs are controlled by the company or platform they are about. I was told that the total war subreddit is controlled by the company that makes total war games, and I think this is believable.

Wouldn't suprise me if that was case for most active gaming subreddits, a lot of content there is digital equivalent of "crowd cheers at company saying there will be no lootboxes/they will fix the bugs". It sucks, half the fun in yapping about videogames is making criticisms and you can't do that on reddit, most gaming forums are dead or non-existent, only active gaming forum that I know about is doomworld.

It just hit me while writing this that maybe part of the reason why almost every release has a subreddit despite not having enough dedicated fans to have functioning forum might be that publishers are paying advertisers for that as you said, though to be fair making a subreddit is also way easier and you don't need to make separate account to participate there (which is bad, non-social media account registration is a first step normfag deterrent).
