Dandelion is Hideaki Sorachi's first one-shot manga, originally published in 2002 by Weekly Shonen Jump. It is the manga that gave Shonen Jump the confidence to greenlit a longer manga by Sorachi, namely Gintama, his most widely known (and excellent) work. I had not read the original one-shot beforehand, but I just finished watching the anime adaptation of it which came out last month.

I thought it was pretty surprising that they would choose adapt this one-shot, considering the fact that it's so old and that it would only amount to 7 episodes. But now that I've seen it I'm very glad they did, because I thought it was fantastic. It managed to achieve a whole lot in 7 episodes, and as a Gintama fan you can see and appreciate how this show laid the groundwork for Gintama. Sorachi really had it all down early, it's very impressive.

I would recommend this show to all Gintama fans here, it will give you the Gintama kick you've been missing back in your life. This show would be an excellent litmus test for those who haven't seen Gintama as well, because it is essentially the prototype of Gintama. If you like this show you will love Gintama, because it is even better.

Hopefully Sorachi's works will continue to be adapted into anime series. The adaptation of 3-nen Z-gumi Ginpachi-sensei was great, and they hinted that they wanted to continue that. I haven't checked out Sorachi's new manga "Class 2-B Hero Destroyerz" yet but I'm sure that's great as well.

One more thing, if you've seen either of the "City of Angels" movies you will get a real kick out of this series, because it is essentially like an anime version of that. Loads of other fun referential humour too, as per usual for Gintama.

Indeed. So many good Gintama openings and endings, the insert/soundtrack tunes are great too. Did you ever finish the anime?
nah I never finished it. I watched all of one piece twice back in day and bunch of other longer anime, I never finished Gintama tho, I think I was just burned out. I did relate hard af to madao tho lmao

I see, but that's also very understandable considering how long it took for the anime to conclude. I started watching Gintama around the time it was about to end so I didn't have to deal with the long wait between seasons. I'd say it's worth watching until the end if you would ever consider picking it back up. Gintama's main appeal of extremely lowbrow humour is kept all throughout, but all the questions the show built up were also answered. The ending is pretty much perfect in my opinion. Watching Dandelion could also be a good way for you to get back into Gintama.

Hasegawa is definitely the best. It is a real flex to have a parody of Gendo Ikari be voiced by the same voice actor as Gendo, especially for a character as ridiculous as Madao. Loads of other high-profile voice actors in Gintama really, the cast were very impressive.
That is for sure one of the best OST tracks from Gintama. Real classic :feelzez:.

The Slumdog Millionaire parody was one of the funniest shit.

That was a great episode. Off the top of my head my favourite Hasegawa episode would probably be episode 188 ("An Observation Journal Should Be Seen Through To The Very End"), that is probably a common opinion though. To build up a story that emotional only to make it a joke again in the end was just perfection. It would be fun make a thread reminiscing about favourite Gintama episodes really, because there are so many good ones.

Yup! I think the reason I was able to stick with Gintama despite its main plot being treated as a secondary thing for most of its run was the wholesomeness that was at the core of its comedy.
