As I understand the wishes are usually granted but with some kind of horrible twist.

What are you talking about?

A number of different series and probably movies have done their own versions of this story. The ones that spring to mind for me are Inside No. 9, Are Your Afraid Of The Dark and The Simpsons. I think The Twilight Zone did too.
