imo it's both genetics and environment/habits, both come hand in hand
if your child suffers from malnutrition or doesn't exercise enough in his childhood (i.e. being a shut in), then chances are he won't look as good as he could have, but in the end that doesn't make him any less of a trucel just because he had potential during his early years.
