How do prisoners rope so easily in jail?

Is it seriously just as simple as grabbing a pair of pants or shoe strings and wrapping it around something and then your neck and laying down? So many prisoners have done it that way and succeeded, and it’s not like they had access to being able to do research on different methods assuming they didn’t do research before they got to jail.
