I feel very spiritually empty. Since my family is Catholic, I'm starting to see God as a coping mechanism. I haven't been to church in years, not since my confirmation. I aspire to become like Thomas Aquinas. What books do you recommend? I already had my atheist phase

The best religious cope is prayer.
What books do you recommend?
There is a 900-year old Sufi poem book called "The Conference of the Birds" which I quite enjoyed reading when I was coping with religion. The English translation I read was by Sholeh Wolpé and it is available for free on Anna's Archive (annas - archive . gl). The book is a story about birds, all from different walks of life walking the road to salvation. It has brutal as well as funny moments in it. If you decide to check it out, skip the foreword and go straight to the actual book. The foreword is just a bunch of nonsense about how the original Persian poetry can't be properly translated to English. That book is good escapism, at least if you're from an European culture like me.

I would also say that it is a good read no matter which of the big five world religions appeal to you.

Thanks for the recommendation. I was reading a biography of Galileo and I enjoyed it. It didn't just focus on his religious life, it also covered how he faced trial for speaking the truth.

This is an interesting video if you want to hear a perspective that tries to justify the Church's case against heliocentrism back in the day.

Okay, so what helped me was not seeing God as a coping mechanism, but seeing it as a hoping mechanism. So check out other churches, learn more theology, learn more about Christ, and understand that loving Christ is a choice. It's an option.

My family is Catholic. Also i'd have to stop eating bacon and pork. I'd also have to pray almost all day. I'm too undisciplined for that.

You can embrace celibacy and face it as volcel as a promise towards God.

I also once made a vow of celibacy to ask God for help. I can also consider fasting as a vow.

same I like to fast for Christ also

either this week for Easter, but for the start of 2026 I did a 3 day water fast

To begin with, I really think you should go to church and talk with a pastor (for me It's pastor, for you probably will be priest)
Then Read Gospel of John, Book of Job, I think these two very good to strengthen faith

I would feel very ashamed to confess my sins related to lust. But i want to feel my soul at peace.

Lol, you don't pray all day as a Muslim who told you that; ~5 mins each prayer including wudu or ablution (washing hands, face, etc.)

You can try getting baptized in various christian branches (i was baptized by the mormons and now I'm with the jehovah witnesses jfl)

No, you can't

Pray to God today and truly accept Jesus as your Savior . Get a real connection with Jesus Christ .

Pray like this :

God my Father I accept that I am a sinner and that I cannot save myself.

Jesus died on the cross for my sins and he is the only salvation and he rose from the dead and is Lord.

I pray this in Jesus name Amen
