We like a good penguincel story around here, considering the threads about Grape-kun. Turns out penguins are just naturally romantic creatures.
Werner Herzog discovers, now and then penguins will grow discontent with the colony. AKA, penguin society as a whole. And they'll just leave. Problem with that though, Antarctica beyond the penguin shores is vast and barren. So vast and so barren, if there's anything out there for depressed penguins to find, humans don't know about it. Likely answer, there's nothing out there for these penguins. But the rope. Herzog frames the question succinctly: "But why?"
What we do know, what's plain to see, is that penguin society simply doesn't offer these depressed penguins anything anymore. You can try and pick these penguins up, take them back to the other penguins, but they just go back to their march to oblivion. And again we see so much of the human condition in the animal kingdom. Suicide is abhorrent. But here's a guy who gave society every chance, but could just find nothing. No answers. So what was the penguin left to do?
