Truthfully, one does doubt that it actually happens all that much now-a-days. It probably had a resurgence for a brief moment when the red-pill really took off, but that was probably it. I sincerely doubt that many guys are cold approaching today.
Basing off of what I've heard Ryo_Hazuki say, though, it probably reached its height in popularity like a decade or two ago and just slowly died off after that. You had tons of grifting faggots (although, I don't think the grift was as bad as it is with the red-pillers today) who made these websites and books on nonsense like 'daygame' and unironically just made it out like you had to try thousands of times until one girl finally accepted you.
And, again, these things were always grifts. There has never been a single point in recent history where cold approaching has ever worked for anyone other than Chad. The reason I can say that so confidently is because despite having thousands of grifters that sold courses and lessons on how to cold approach girls, there is a very telling lack of advice on what you're supposed to do after you hypothetically convince a girl to give you her number or time of day. That's because these people know for a fact that their advice isn't going to work and therefore they don't even need to spend time entertaining the thought of some poor incel actually managing to successfully court a girl.
Cold approaching does not and never has worked. I can only guess that most guys who weren't Chads got into relationships through primarily-male friend groups that just happened to have a girl or two, and therefore became hyper-competitive as all the guys in the group tried to one-up one another and impress the foids. Even then, most of those guys were just MTNs at best, but considering they were the highest-quality orbitors, they eventually got chosen and probably just ended up becoming Oofy Doofies in loveless marriages.
